The Best Job Skill to Have on Your Resume

By Rene Santana on June 24, 2019

Aside from writing, there was one job skill I found to be the best to have, not because of the positions it offered, but because of it’s practicality and significance. It was also the hardest skill to learn from crash courses. This highly sought-after job skill is computer programming and, contrary to popular belief, it is for everyone to pick and learn. While you do need the utmost patience and determination, the payoff is literally worth every second you spend learning it.

Learning coding can have literal big payoffs!

There are apps, classes, Meetup groups, and yes, campus courses you can enroll in to boost and hone your coding skills. Even if you only pick up on HTML coding, you would still become instantly more valuable to employers as they may found highly competent for the job. Computer coding jobs are high up on the list well-paid positions, and that is certainly not going to change anytime soon.

Where to start? HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. If JavaScript isn’t your cup of java, then you can try out Python, Ruby, or if you are up for a challenge,  C++. The easiest language to pick and learn is HTML5, as you would be dealing with the barebone basics of coding and everything is in understandable English. The next thing you’d learn is an object-based language, which may sound abstract and scary, but it after some intensive learning, it does get better the more you use it.

Overwhelmed by the possibilities of coding? I’ll give you a very, VERY rough idea of what you can do with coding skills. You can build an app to help people stranded on the side of the road, trying to fix their car. To start, you would use Python and SQL to build an A.I. bot to feed info into that can find solutions based on what the person typed in. To use the bot’s database, you would then use HTML5  to build an interface for the person to type in and see the solutions. The app doesn’t need to look pretty, but it should be clear for the person to understand in the heat of the moment. Building apps isn’t an easy job, but if you can make something useful, practical, easy to use, and fun, you potentially have a best seller app.

If you need something to fill in your empty hours, go to Codecademy, Flatiron School, and or Sololearn to start building and earning your certificates for coding. Just as you knowing two or more languages can boost your value, knowing coding languages can do the same and more. Having seen many other resumes pass by while at work or while job searching, I don’t often come across people saying they know a coding language, so I’m not kidding when I say it truly does put you a cut above the rest.
