5 Netflix Shows to Binge for Summer 2019

By Marina Krivonossova on June 20, 2019

With finals wrapping up and summer being just around the corner, it’s finally time to kick back, relax, and take in the vacation vibes! Summer vacation is the time for hanging out by the pool, going on hikes, treating yourself to ice cream, and of course — watching your favorite shows. But what if you’re like me and have a hard time finding a good show to watch? You know the drill — you end up scrolling relentlessly through your Netflix suggestions, giving 20 minutes of each new show a shot, only to be disappointed and forced to return to your show-searching quest.

Well, look no further! I’ve gone through the effort of trying out a bunch of Netflix shows and sorting out which ones are binge-worthy for college students like you this summer.

Now, what are you looking for?

(1) A detective murder-mystery show with a supernatural twist? Go for Lucifer. This show, set in Los Angeles, is centered on the life of the fallen angel himself. However, Lucifer’s identity remains a secret, as he begins to work side-by-side with a homicide detective by the name of Chloe, as the two of them prove to be the prime duo capable of solving any crime that comes their way. As the show progresses, secrets are revealed about various characters’ identities as drama and the murders pile up. If you’re looking for an attention-grabbing detective drama this summer — and you’re interested in getting a peek inside the supernatural world of angels and demons — then Lucifer is the show for you.

(2) A dramatic dark comedy teeming with romance, betrayal, and revenge? Go for Imposters. There really is no particular setting for this insane show, since the main character, Maddie, is a marriage con artist who travels the world, tricking men and women alike into marriage in order to strip them of their wealth. Things seem to be going well for her until three of her victims fail to let her disappear without a trace. An unlikely team, the three of them make it their mission to track Maddie down for their secret goal. This show leaves your heart racing with every new episode, making you unable to walk away from the TV without seeing what happens next — the ultimate dream of any Netflix binge-watcher.

(3) Something light, funny, and relaxing? Go for New Girl. Yet another LA-based show (I can’t help my SoCal bias as a local here), it follows the life of a teacher by the name of Jessica Day (aka Jess), who moves in with a handful of male roommates after a Craigslist ad brings them all together. She’s recovering from a failed relationship and trying to make the most of her life post-heartbreak, and her new friends help her do just that. New Girl is a personal favorite of mine because it’s calm, relaxing, and relatable. You can literally watch this show for hours on end and not notice the time fly by, because Jess’ upbeat and quirky personality lands her in the most hilarious predicaments that make you go, “Same.” Not only that, but all the seasons are on Netflix — this is a huge win for people like me, who hate being left hanging by a show that still has seasons underway.

(4) A medical drama that’s actually not set in a hospital? Go for Royal Pains. While I enjoy shows like House and Grey’s Anatomy, the whole hospital and doctor’s office aesthetic can really bring me down. That’s why I fell in love with Royal Pains — all the interesting cases of other medical shows, combined with the appealing setting of Long Island. Hank, the star of the show, is a doctor who’s driven out of the hospital-set medical field and pushed by his brother to open his own private medical practice after accidentally saving the life of an individual at an upscale party. This show has its fair share of medically-related drama that leaves you on your toes, but it’s also well-balanced with hints of comedy and relatable relationship drama.

(5) A realistic, low-key hilarious rom-com about two completely opposite individuals whose worlds collide? Go for Love. I won’t even tell you what city this one’s set in, because you can probably already guess, given my aforementioned SoCal pride. This show follows the lives of Mickey, an all-over-the-place young woman working in radio (while hating every minute of it), and Gus, a lowkey movie set tutor (Mickey’s polar opposite), as their paths unexpectedly cross at a gas station convenience store. I appreciate Love for its realistic portrayal of contemporary relationships. The makers of this show reveal the nitty-gritty details that make love — love. They keep it real, and they keep it interesting, and that’s something I can really get behind. Today’s TV shows and movies about relationships seem to radiate fakeness, with their unrealistic portrayals of happily-ever-afters and all-around perfection. Not Love. So, if you want something that really screams reality — with the ideal balance of every possible emotion you can ever imagine — then give this show a try. Just like with New Girl, every single season is on Netflix. Gotta ~love~ it!

Do you have any Netflix movie/show suggestions that you think your fellow college students might be interested in this summer? Feel free to drop some titles in the comments to help out someone in search of that binge-worthy show. And most importantly, enjoy your summer! You’ve earned it.
