Film Posters

People say that your favorite film says a lot about you. It shows what you enjoy, what values and kinds of stories that are important to you. Oftentimes, especially in college living situations, you cannot paint your walls and renovate your living space to reflect your personal style and personality. You also often cannot afford to get the pieces or do the renovations that would best showcase your style.

A simple way to find entertainment themed décor that you can afford, shows off your style, is easy to put up and not damaging to walls and other surfaces are film posters!

You can show off your favorite films, which showcases your style too! Posters are works of art in themselves, so it is just like putting up art on your wall. And often movies have different posters even for the same film so you can find ones that you like the best. They are generally easy to find and order and you can tack or tape them on your wall.

For inspiration, the top 10 films of all-time (based on domestic gross and adjusted for inflation) include:

  • Gone With the Wind (1939)
  • Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)
  • The Sound of Music (1965)
  • E. T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
  • Titanic (1997)
  • The Ten Commandments (1956)
  • Jaws (1975)
  • Doctor Zhivago (1965)
  • The Exorcist (1973)
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

DVD Collection

Almost everybody has a collection of DVDs. If you love film, why not put them on display and use them as décor? DVD’s have such colorful covers, which are still seen on their spines. Show off your extensive library or the films you are most proud of.

DVD’s are something you already have so it is not like you have to go out and spend money on this kind of décor. You use what you have!

You can sort your collection by color to keep a cohesive, balanced palate or you can use other sorts of sorting tactics, like alphabetizing by title or organizing by genre and see what kind of cool color patterns you get that are more abstract.

You can also show them off in interesting ways. Rather than hide them away in a closed cupboard or boxes, display them in shelves like books. Or get more creative with your display—the possibilities are endless!

Entertainment-themed throw accents

Another way to use entertainment themed décor in your home (without going too over the top) is to use discrete little throws or accent pieces throughout your home. Most people buy inexpensive little things like this in college, so you should be able to find cheap and on-budget items to use throughout your home.

Maybe your color scheme for this room is red and yellow, for Iron Man. Or maybe you love the Avengers, so on your couch, you have a pillow stylized after each member. Maybe you keep a throw blanket handy on the couch with your favorite Pokemon emblazoned on it. You could have a Rick & Morty cup holder for your toothbrush. Maybe you have a map displayed on your wall that is not of our world, but the world in which Lord of the Rings is set. You could have Hannah Montana salt and pepper shakers if that is what you really wanted.

Whatever it is that you are into, you can definitely find merchandise with it to sprinkle throughout your home to show what fandoms you are a member of without going too far and having your whole home decorated with it.
