As college students, you might have expensive taste without the bank account to match. Bedrooms are a space where college students not only sleep, but eat, study, and hang out with friends. Fortunately, there are a few cheap and easy ways to glam up your bedroom without breaking the bank.

 1. Textiles and textures

Taking a good look at your textile situation can really help you figure out how to switch up your style. Is your duvet drab and dull? Are your pillows squished and worn? Is your flooring just a sea of grey? Adding or swapping out textiles can really help you change your bedroom from boring to glamorous.

One of the easiest textiles to change are pillows. Sure, you may want to keep your tried and true sleeping pillow, but what about something with a little more pizzazz? Decorative pillows can completely transform the way your bed looks. As a bonus, they come in some wonderful colors, textures, and styles that can make your bedroom way more glam. You can find pillows that have fun patterns, are super fuzzy, or completely sequined! They’re a great way to show your personality without having to completely change your bedroom.

In a similar fashion, you might not have the money or the means to buy a completely new bedding set, but you might have the budget to get a new blanket. Adding a new blanket or throw over the end of your bed, or your entire bed, can completely change this look. Because you don’t have to commit to a certain style, you can switch them out easily if you want to change them up. Feel free to be more adventurous with your choices! You could choose a blanket that has an interesting texture or a unique design.

The last textile to consider is your rug. Do you have one? Because bedrooms are so often carpeted, people often forget that rugs can still be a valuable item to have in a bedroom. If you feel like your bedroom space is a bit boring, consider adding a rug! It can completely change the dynamic of the room. Like the pillows and blankets, a rug is a great opportunity to add in some unique texture and style into your space. Just make sure that you purchase a rug of the correct size for your space. You don’t want it to be too large or it will overwhelm your room.

2. Frame it

Most of us like having pictures of our friends and family around our living space. It reminds of us good memories and great people. When we’re in college, however, we tend to get a bit lazy with our pictures. College students are especially prone to tacking or taping up photos like they are posters on walls. That isn’t very glamorous, is it?

Simply taking the time to put your pictures into frames can make a huge difference in the feel of your room. You can then hang these on the wall or prop them up on dressers or shelves. Many people think that framing their pictures will be too expensive, but you can find lots of cheap frames at good prices. Many large grocery stores like Walmart sell cheap frames, as do second-hand shops like Goodwill. When you’re buying frames, just remember to try and buy ones that are a similar color or style. Having many diverse frames can give a certain eclectic look, but sometimes it can make your room appear disorganized. You should also make sure that you know the size of the frames you’re looking for before going shopping.

3. Change your lighting

You could have the nicest textiles and decorations in the entire building, but it still won’t look glamorous under harsh overhead lighting. Many apartments and dorms only have one fluorescent bulb hung from the ceiling. This kind of lighting does nothing for the mood and feel of your bedroom. Changing your lighting can be a huge step in making your bedroom feel like a much better space overall.

Luckily, there are many cheap and easy options when changing up your lighting. One popular trend is to hang string lights around your bed-frame or where your walls meet the ceiling. These kinds of lights give off a wonderful ethereal quality that will really add to your space. You can find string lights almost anywhere that sells lighting materials, and they are generally pretty cheap too.

Another option is to utilize floor lamps. Floor lamps are great if you want more light than string lights give off without having to switch on your overhead. You don’t have to go crazy finding the best lamp ever. There are many wonderful basic, but still sleek, options available at many home goods stores.

With these tips, you’ll be able to say goodbye to your boring bedroom.
